Learning And Teaching

In the Primary School (year 1 to 6) we use the National Curriculum of England to deliver learning the medium of English in the core subjects of English and Mathematics. In addition to these core subjects, the school provides a curriculum in Science, Humanities, PE, Art, ICT, French and KSS. The Arabic language and Islamic Studies curriculums are delivered as per the Ministry of Education guidelines.Our curriculum is designed to provide an aspirational and rounded education for all children, helping them to grow into confident, thoughtful, highly motivated lifelong-learners who continually expand what they believe to be possible. As well as achieving well academically, we believe that it’s important for children to build the social, physical and emotional skills that lead to resilience and the ability to embrace challenges and change. These are skills that will also enable them to develop as responsible members of society.Above all, we aim to stir in children a passion for discovering the things they excel at and to develop the capability and confidence to pursue them actively throughout their lives.
We also believe that we can only achieve the best for our pupils by working closely with parents. There are many opportunities for parents to share in their child’s education and visitors are always welcome into school by appointment.
We have a dynamic and diverse staff of educators. Our teachers are committed to developing the whole child and to ensure our students achieve academically.Our teachers build positive relationships with students and target each student’s individual needs as much as they can. Each member of our staff is dedicated to help students to be successful and to become life-long learners.

Students in the secondary school study using textbooks based on the National Curriculum of England, with a view to preparing them for the IGCSE and Advanced Level examinations (Year 11). We strive to maintain and develop high standards of education, both in teaching and in learning, necessitating an ongoing process of self-evaluation, designed to keep our school functioning at a level of excellence. Teachers are asked to undertake self-evaluation and peer evaluation to improve teaching practice. Students are encouraged to evaluate their own learning, and to set achievable, yet aspirational targets, thus developing greater self-awareness of their current attainment and their target level.

In addition to our academic programme, we also offer our students a variety of extra-curricular activities designed to create well-rounded students.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

At Key Stage 3 students have the opportunity to study a variety of subjects as shown the table below. All students are expected to complete the homework as directed by the class teacher.

    • Year 9 students study pre-IGCSE content so they are better prepared for the IGCSE programme in Year 10 and 11.

The amount of homework will vary dependent on the number of lessons the students take over the week. All students are expected to complete the work on time and independently in order to allow their teacher and themselves to assess their understanding.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11)

At IAK we study four IGCSE subjects in Year 10 and another four in year 11. Students will take IGCSE in Maths (core/extended), English (1st or 2nd language), Arabic, Islamic and one additional IGCSE from the choices provided by the school. At the end of the year they will sit the formal Cambridge IGCSE exams. Thus, by the end of Year 10 students will already have secured up to four IGCSE’s.

In Year 11 students will again study four more subjects and sit the external exams. We also now offer AS Maths for Year 11 students. This is offered to those students who secure a minimum of a A* or A in their IGCSE in Year 10 and has limited seats available.

The amount of homework will vary dependent on the number of lessons the students take over the week. All students are expected to complete the work on time and independently in order to allow their teacher and themselves to assess their understanding. IGCSE students should be spending typically 4 hours per subject, per week at home. This can include revision, making notes, past papers and any other tasks set by the subject teacher.

Key Stage 5 (Year 12)

At Year 12 students can study up to FOUR AS subjects with the Edexcel examination board. In order to study for the AS level students will need to have secured a minimum of a Grade B in that subject; example to study Physics AS a student will need to have secured a minimum of a Grade B in Physics IGCSE (either Cambridge or Edexcel). Students also have the opportunity to a mix of AS and IG subjects at Year 12. Currently we do not offer Year 12 (A2).

The amount of homework will vary dependent on the number of lessons the students take over the week. All students are expected to complete the work on time and independently in order to allow their teacher and themselves to assess their understanding.

Year 12 students should be spending typically 5 to 6 hours per subject per week at home. This can include revision, making notes, past papers and any other tasks set by the subject teacher.

القسم يعمل به مجموعة من المعلمين والمعلمات يتميزون بالكفاءة الكبيرة والخبرات العريضة بطرق التدريس الحديثة حيث يقومون بتدريس الأهداف العامة والخاصة للغة العربية وفق لكل مرحلة تبعا لمنهج وزارة التربية الكويتية ويحرصون  على غرس القيم التربوية ومكارم الأخلاق في نفوس وسلوك الطلاب .

Central to all we do at IAK is the belief that each of our students should feel supported and valued. A carefully integrated system of pastoral care has created a strong team of staff, each with the responsibility of looking after the welfare of an allocated group of children.

In Foundation Stage it is the class teacher and classroom assistant who take primary responsibility for the care of the children in their class. They are lead and assisted by a Head of Foundation.

In Primary (Years 1 to 6), the class teacher (in year 1 and 2, the classroom assistant also) are the primary caretakers of the children in their class. Ultimate responsibility rests with the Deputy Head and Head of Primary.

In Secondary (Years 7-12), Form tutors are the ’front line’ of the pastoral provision, they meet their students daily.

The Head of Pastoral Care and the Social Worker work across the school supporting our students, staff and parents as required.

We like to promote a relaxed atmosphere amongst staff and students in the school, whilst maintaining high standards and expectations of behaviour. Lapses are responded to with a variety of sanctions. Where a student is unwilling or unable to meet these standards, then their parents will be contacted.
